With Mercury joining in with the Gemini fun, entering his own sign on the morning of 3rd June here in the UK to join the Sun, Venus and Jupiter, and forming an exact (partile) conjunction to Jupiter on the 4th, now seems like a good time for a deeper delve into Jupiter in Gemini could play out. The Gemini New Moon follows quickly on the heels of Mercury’s ingress, on 6th June, and I’ll share some thoughts on that with you in a few days , as well as other key aspects for the first couple of weeks of June.
But first, Mercury in Gemini:
Between now and July 2025 Mercury, the quick-witted, nimble-footed trickster, ruler of Gemini, acts as host to Jupiter, the great benefic of the ancient zodiac, the modern day bringer of “joy”, the “games-master” in our role-playing game we call life. Jupiter will want to expand our experiences, our knowledge, and our philosophical understanding. He will open channels of communication, debate, discussion and negotiations he will bring visions of intellectual potentials and possibilities; he may even encourage us to dive into the hidden, the mysterious, the spiritual, religious and mystical.
In this dynamic mutable sign, we can expect to see manifest changes and activity in our lives - especially in the house in our own natal chart where we find Gemini on the cusp - as well as globally. Wherever your natal Jupiter and natal Mercury reside will also feel the effect of this Mercury influenced expansive Jupiter. Think of this relationship as a bit like a TV sitcom, with Mercury playing the role of the mischievous child and Jupiter as the indulgent parent. Watch an episode of the UK series “Outnumbered” and you’re just about there. This relationship is crucial in understanding the dynamics of Jupiter in Gemini, as it sets the stage for an interplay of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom.
Gemini: striving towards Solstice
Gemini, the sign associated with Mercury, is the sign that is striving to reach its zenith, the Summer Solstice, its highest point in the sky, and the longest day. We reach out with eager hands and an inquisitive mind to reach that elusive goal. Then, just it does so, it hands over to Cancer and so the Sun begins it’s inevitable descent towards the darkness (here in the northern hemisphere- the opposite is true for the southern hemisphere though the astrological symbolism remains the same whichever hemisphere you are in). It is the sign that is below the eastern horizon at noon at the winter solstice, and on the Midheaven at noon in May. This seasonal pattern of growth signifies Gemini’s constant search for knowledge and understanding, always reaching for its final goal of understanding but never, ever, seemingly quite getting there. After all, there is always more to discover, more to learn. We could think of Gemini as the ambitious office junior who’s always reaching for the stars but hasn’t quite made it to the prized window seat yet, probably because they like to play a prank or two on others and are never quite settled in their tasks. Surely others can see their huge potential and intellectual gifts, can’t they? And if they can’t then why hang around. Time to move in to something better, somewhere better where they’ll be appreciated for their brilliance.
This pattern of constant movement and change is further emphasised by the synodic cycle of its ruling planet, Mercury, as it moves back and forth across the Sun. Here we experience the symbolic constant handing over from light to dark, then dark to light: a cycle of learning and unlearning as it shifts from morning star back to evening star with long periods of invisibility under the Sun’s beams where Mercury seems to descend into the otherworld. Here is revealed mission as messenger of the gods, and as psychopomp of the dead.
The Masculine Air Sign’s Journey to the light, and the Herald of the dark
As a masculine Air sign, Gemini embodies the sacred existential doubt and the desire to understand. It is about collecting facts and knowledge through the growing light before the days wane in length, even as they grow warmer. This journey towards the light, then shifting towards dark, allows us to question our understanding of the world and of ourselves. Gemini is all about questioning everything. It’s like that annoying child at school who always has their hand up, asking “why?” But this sacred existential doubt and the desire to understand is what makes Gemini so fascinating. It’s like a detective, collecting as many facts and knowledge as possible before it’s too late. The inevitable moment of the Solstice and beginning of the slow decline and slide southward of the rising and setting Sun looms, even as Gemini strives for and desires it.
Learning as Deconstruction and Reconstruction
Learning, in the context of Jupiter in Gemini, is a flexible never ending process of deconstruction and reconstruction. It is about finding commitment (Jupiter) and order in the creative chaos of the trickster (Mercury). It’s a bit like building your own PC, then taking it apart again, and then building it all over again in a different way, with a few different components to see if it works better another way. But beware of using that flexibility for devious and selfish reasons; while Mercury relishes a bit of underhanded shenanigans from time to time, in the long term Jupiter is unlikely to go along with that sort of game playing. And remember, we can’t understand anything unless we understand opposites.
Manifestations of Jupiter in Gemini
With Jupiter in Gemini, and depending where Gemini is in our own chart, we can expect it to potentially manifest as:
Curiosity: A desire to know and understand the world around us; think of the Magus in the Thoth tarot balanced on a knife edge, or a cat with a laser pointer - and we know what happened to that apocryphal cat!
Extreme Experimentation: A willingness to push boundaries and explore new ideas: the mad scientist in a lab, the mystic away with the (very real and potentially dangerous) fairies (don’t *ever* mess with fairies), the magician invoking some sort of otherworldly demon (that’s probably never a good idea either unless you know *exactly* what you’re doing - just saying).
Collecting Facts: An insatiable appetite for information and knowledge. Research gone into overdrive, a trivia champion on a winning streak. Buying that 400th book by yet another author on the same subject as those other 399 because the key to explaining everything could finally be revealed in that one book (it almost certainly won’t, but then you never know….)
Knowing What and When We Don’t Know: An acceptance of our limitations, when we are out of our depth, and the humility to admit when we don’t know something.
Open-mindedness: A readiness to consider different perspectives and ideas. Like a parachute, it works best when open. Listening as much as - or more than- talking.
Releasing of Dogma: A rejection of rigid belief systems and the embracing of more flexible understanding, which leads to….
Acceptance of Dichotomy: An understanding that opposites can coexist and that there is rarely a clear right or wrong, but rather, shades of grey. Embracing the illogical, because logic is overrated anyway. Jupiter loves the big picture perspective though Mercury, who likes the facts to be clear cut, is unlikely to go along too happily with that - expect quarrels and confusion too, especially if you have strong Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces (the Mutable signs) in your personal chart.
Making Judgements that Reconcile Opposites
Jupiter in Gemini is about making judgments that reconcile opposites, understanding that opposites include everything and everyone. It’s like the stories of Arthur and Gwynn ap Nudd in Welsh myth, or Zeus and Hades, Frodo and Sauron, or any myth of Light vs Dark. It’s about understanding that one truth holds the seed of the other, and that more than one thing can be true simultaneously. In the Lord of the Rings, the destruction of the One Ring brings about the fading of the elves and their beauty at the same time as destroying Sauron. It’s about seeing the shape of every situation and recognising a cosmic morality - not the human construct of a societal morality that morphs, shifts and changes - though that may be the path Mercury wants us to follow. Jupiter could be thought of as like a cosmic mediator, always trying to find the middle ground. Sometimes, though, Jupiter can get a little carried away too, and bring us too much of what we thought was a good thing!
Mercury as Trickster, Jupiter as Games-Master
In our stellar role-playing game, Mercury plays the trickster, always stirring the cauldron or tossing random dice to see how they land, while Jupiter plays the games-master, maintaining order in the chaos with his galactic Dungeons and Dragons rulebook. This dynamic can manifest as being open-minded and knowing all, or being closed-minded with total certainty. Why the role playing analogy? Because Mercury loves a game and loves to play as many different parts as possible. Such fun - unless, of course, it isn’t. Games can quickly escalate to open warfare.
A Block in the Road?
One thing to look out for in late 2024 and early 2025 is a Jupiter Saturn square, which will bring a new dynamic to Jupiter in Gemini. It’s like adding a new restrictive and discriminating rule to the game - it might be more than a bit a bit awkward, unfamiliar and awkward at first, but eventually, it becomes part of the flow, and may help to bring positive re
sults. I’ll share much more on this closer to the actual transit.
Jupiter in Gemini in the past
Look back at previous periods when Jupiter was in Gemini, both out there in the world as well as in your own lives. We can see patterns and themes emerge. These periods are often marked by curiosity, experimentation, and a desire to understand the world in new ways. Technological innovation has often occurred during past Jupiter in Gemini transits. These are times of questioning, of pushing boundaries, and of embracing the chaos and magic of the cosmos. Let’s all make the most of the opportunities presented to us, enjoy the game and May your dice rolls always be ‘with advantage’ (obscure Dungeons and Dragons reference).
With infinite love and blessings,
